Youth Violence Prevention Week

According to the CDC , youth violence occurs when there is an intentional use of force or power to injure others. The age of those who are among the perpetrators, victims or witnesses of this violence is between the ages of 14-24. The good news is that youth violence is preventable!! According to Janet Benavente from Colorado State University , researchers agree on prevention resources for youth violence: Youth violence is learned and can be unlearned. Youth should be part of the solution for preventing violence. Because violence is such a complex issue, it requires a comprehensive and multifaceted approach. Partnerships and collaborations work more effectively than individual efforts. In addition, the CDC recognizes that universal school-wide prevention approaches have the best success rate of reducing violence and other risk behaviors in youth. Each year, SAVE and Sandy Hook Promise sponsors the National Youth Violence Awareness Prevention Week....

Peer Mediation Team A peer mediation team consists of the following members: two disputants and two mediators. Registration The school’s peer mediation coordinator/administrator/counselor/teacher may register a team. Registration per team is $40.00. Once the fee is processed, the team will be registered for the tournament. Each school will receive a confirmation email with the next steps. Direct Instruction and Guided Practice Matter in Conflict Resolution and Social-Emotional Learning

Kralowec Conflict Resolution Quarterly, vol. 33, no.3, Spring 2016 Seven schools in an economically challenged area of an urban school district in central California implemented mentored peer mediation programs under the guidance of a university–K-12 partnership project, Mediator Mentors. Individual student outcomes for social-cognitive dispositions, perceptions of school climate, conflict strategy choices, and standardized testing results in language arts were analyzed on the basis of assessments administered after one year of program implementation and compared to pretest values generated by student mediators and non-mediators. Attendance and student perceptions of school safety were also examined after a year of peer mediation at the schools.
