Once we get students excited about mediation and peace work, how do we get them to think about a future in the field? Career education in being introduced with younger and younger students today, yet we don’t always present them with practical pathways that they could take to incorporate mediation, conflict resolution, and peacebuilding skills in their future work.

David J. Smith is a career coach and the president of the Forage Center for Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Education. He teaches at the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University and was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar teaching ADR and peace studies. He is a recipient of the William Kreidler Award for Distinguished Service to the Field of Conflict Resolution, and the author of Peace Jobs: A Student’s Guide to Starting a Career Working for Peace (IAP 2016).
